Cape Clear Boots

old boots drawing pencil

I found these boots in our old trunk. I had worn them uncomfortably when I spent a rugged week watching seabirds on Clear Island, where the sharply jagged and dangerous Cape Clear, looking out to Fastnet Rock lighthouse, is Ireland's southernmost point. We had seen hundreds of Cory's Shearwaters in one day, skuas, petrels, and some rarities for Ireland ringed that week at the ornithological station on the island. A lot of memories are tied up in those laces. I just set these up on a round stool and drew them freehand about sight-size.
