CAP AND BELLS, oil, 130 X 95 cms
© Fergus A Ryan, 2019 Private Collection
An impossible love, that of a court jester for the young queen. She spurns his love offering of soul and heart (the blue and red cloths), but he determines to sacrifice everything for her attention, represented by his symbol of identity. So he leaves his cap and bells where the queen will walk by, and she holds them to her bosom, but it is too late. This painting is based on a poem by the Irish poet W B Yeats, which he wrote after a dream. His own offer of love had been turned down twice.
