The distinctive form of Monte Sorrate dominates the Roman campagna in this view from Civita Castellana. The town, which dates from Faliscan times, is surrounded by spectacular deep gorges with orangey-ochre cliffs. These gorges attracted many northern European painters on the Grand Tour, notably Camille Corot and JMW Turner. For almost two months in the Summer of 2013 I followed literally in their footsteps as part of an Italian Summer School led by master painter Israel Hershberg of the Jerusalem Studio School.
