Tidepool

egg tempera painting of tidal marsh and Monterey pines exhibited RHA Royal Hibernian Academy

egg tempera, 66 x 122 cm (26"x 48") © Fergus A Ryan, 2014

Exhibited Royal Hibernian Academy 2014

This tidal marsh is just beside my house. The view across the estuary, here at low tide, is visible from my studio. In the distance is an island called 'Ireland's Eye', and to the right, beyond the Monterey Pines, Howth Head, where the poet W B Yeats lived for some time. The marsh seemed to me like 'the waters and the wild' in Yeats' poem 'Stolen Child' set in Sligo. As I stood far out from my house on a gentle January day a buzzard wheeled low overhead and flapping herons and egrets glided cautiously away from the intruder. It was Yeats' magical 'faery land'.
