These are the ruins of the old Roman bridge at Narni, in Umbria, the ancient Roman town of Narnia, from which

C S Lewis drew the name of his magical world. It was built by Augustus in 27 BC. To the right a railway now runs through one of its remaining arches. I painted this during the morning of a very hot day, with temperatures around 40ºC, accompanied by three other painters who were participating in the Italian Summer school of the Jerusalem Studio School, under the direction of Israel Hershberg.
